The one thing I ask of the LORD — the thing I seek most — is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. Psalm 27:4 NLT
One of the more interesting features of human life is the diminishing curve of gratification. It takes a greater and greater investment of time, or money, or psychic energy to get less and less gratification.
When we got that first, rather basic, computer the gratification was immense. And yes, the second one, more expensive, was better, but – . And now, with a yawn, we simply take for granted the immense computing power that is at our finger-tips. And we go in search of something else to give us a kick of gratification. Once it was a day-trip to Lake Erie. Now, to get a similar thrill it takes a two-week cruise to Tahiti.
Where is the end? The truth is that there is no end to that road. The singer Peggy Lee said it well some years ago with her song titled “Is That All There Is?” Having found an empty end to every gratification, she contemplates suicide but decides against it because she knows that when she has done it, she will be asking, “Is that all there is?”
Oh, but there is another way, a way that does not lead down into darkness, but up into light! It is a way that is deceptively simple, but one that is more easily said than done. It is to replace your wants with His wants! Your wants can never be satisfied, because in them there is always the worm saying, “Isn’t there more?” But when what you want is Jesus, and you find his way infinitely satisfying, as you will, a strange thing happens: you stop expecting earthly joys to give more than they can. Instead, taking them at their limited best, you find them quite delightful. You don’t demand of them what they were never meant to supply. You don’t demand that the sunset last forever, or that tomorrow’s sunset be better than today’s. In your Creator, you have found a joy that does not go away, and therefore can let this momentary pleasure be just that, a sweet momentary pleasure.
So, what’s my point? Make your wants primary and never have enough. Combine all your wants into wanting Him and find satisfaction now and forever
