Lies

We know we have rebelled and have denied the LORD. We have turned our backs on our God. We know how unfair and oppressive we have been, carefully planning our deceitful lies.              Isaiah 59:13 NLT

“…God, who ‘requires truth in the inward parts” hates all hypocrisy, falsehood, and deceit.”[1] This statement gets at the heart of the matter. Yahweh has created “what is so.” This is the truth, a truth that cannot be altered. All that is “not so” is a lie. It is as simple as that. The big lie is individual autonomy. If we take that road, then we must build up a whole tissue of lies to support it, up to and including the final lie: there is no God. To tell any lie is thus to partake in the Great Lie. It says that I can distort reality to suit my own ends.

I am becoming more convinced that all sin finally comes down to lying. If I steal something I am saying that what is not mine is mine – a lie. If I have sex with a woman who is not my wife, I say that she belongs to me – a lie. If I live in pride, I am saying that I am more important and more valuable than others – a lie. Sin begins in a lie – I can do what I want without reference to the Creator’s purposes and standards – and it ends in lie upon lie. He does require truth in the inward parts, starting with this: you are God and I am your creature, responsible to exercise the gift of life under your control. Truth.
