“I have a plan for the whole earth, a hand of judgment upon all the nations.” The LORD of Heaven’s Armies has spoken — who can change his plans? When his hand is raised, who can stop him?
Isaiah 14:26-27 NLT
In Isaiah chapter 14, the phrase “Yahweh of Heaven’s Armies” appears four times in six verses between 22 and 27. In all four cases it is said that he speaks or has spoken. First, he speaks judgment on Babylon and then on Assyria, two nations that had intended to absorb and thus eliminate the people of God. That was never going to happen. Why not? Because I AM, the only self-existent being in the universe, the one who has all the power that flung the host of stars, heaven’s armies, across the skies has said differently. He is not merely The Force, silent and unaccountable. He is the Person, who has plans and purposes and has communicated them to the world, most wonderfully in the Word, who came to us in Bethlehem.
What does this mean? It means we do not have to wring our hands over the collapse of our political systems, over the disappearance of civil discourse, over the destruction of public morality, over the rise of autocratic nationalism around the world. Yahweh of Heaven’s Armies has spoken his word over it all. His announced plans will be accomplished now just as surely as they were more than 2600 years ago.
“Then pealed the bells more loud and deep,
God is not dead nor doth he sleep.
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.”
Yahweh’s plans and purposes may not accord with our wishes and desires, but they will be accomplished, and his intentions for the ultimate salvation of his creation will be carried out.
