Deeper with Christ 3

“And I shall give them one heart, and shall put a new spirit within them. And I shall take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh                                                            (Ezekiel 11:19 ESV)

To grow deeper in Christ, we need to be re-programmed and that’s what the Holy Spirit does. We have a very serious problem in terms of the way we have been programmed to think about reality. That way of thinking has to be changed. Realistically, that change may take some time, but it begins in a moment of faith and belief. Then, as we obey the Spirit’s prompting, it will become a full reality in us. So, how does our thinking have to be changed?  What is it that is truly important? It is not getting all I want to eat; it is not getting all the sleep, the entertainment, the sex, the things, the adulation, and on and on, that I want. What is the important thing? Integrity. What? Yes, integrity, to become truly one.

But don’t seek integrity, seek God. Integrity is a by-product, the result of having all our desires, our goals, and our behavior unified in service to him. That person can be trusted. She does not say one thing one day and another the next. That person will keep his promises even if he was only nineteen at the time and didn’t know what he was saying! She will be more concerned about the rights of others than her own rights. He will be the same with the weak as he is with the powerful. Because their whole life is devoted to God, they are one.

Can God do this? Can he make our divided, conflicted hearts one? Can he give us purity, not only in the sexual area, but in every other area of our lives? Can he give us kindness when the whole tone of life is, “Cut them down and hit them where it hurts?” Can God give us simplicity in our wants? Can he give us love when everyone around us laughs at the idea of freely giving yourself to other people without getting anything in return?

Can God re-orient our values, can He change the way we think – and act? The Bible tells us that he can. You can claim God’s promise that by the power of the Holy Spirit he can make your heart one, and you will discover that you don’t have to live the American dream. You can live God’s dream.
