“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:7
We live in a world where personal convenience, personal desire, and personal comfort are everything. Faced with those realities, truth is a poor second. Why should I tell you the truth if it’s not convenient? Why should I keep my promises if it doesn’t serve my desires? Why wouldn’t I lie if the truth would make me uncomfortable. These facts explain why 90% of college students in America declare there is no such thing as absolute truth.
But this is not a new way of thinking. It has been with us since the dawn of time. Why is that? It is because since our first mother and father, we have been seduced by a lie. That lie is that you and I and our desires are ultimate reality. That is what Adam and Eve’s sin was about. If you can decide what is right and wrong for you, you have effectively made yourself God. But that is a lie; it is not true. Build your life on that lie, and the rest of your behavior will have to be a structure of lies to support it.
If you ever once admit there is Someone outside of yourself who has your very best interests at heart and you are suddenly free to tell the truth and be true. When you are loved by Jesus Christ to the end of eternity, you don’t have to lie anymore. You don’t have to impress anybody. You can keep your word because you know He will supply your needs. You can be set free to be true. He will enable you to be true even if our culture is going to hell in a hand basket, even if people are lying about everything, even if a man’s word of honor is worthless, even if it’s costly to tell the truth. When you belong to Jesus, the Truth, you can afford to be true. Have you discovered a Jesus like that, One who will enable you to be true, no matter what??
