I was sitting on my screened porch with my Bible open on my lap watching a sprightly little bird hopping around on the patio outside. I thought, “I like little birdies,” and out of the void came a smiling voice, “I do too.” I was stunned, and then overwhelmed. He knows every bird, including that little one I was watching, and beyond that every tree, and beyond that every – , and beyond that – , and, and, down to the last atom in the universe.
Well, in this day of computers, that kind of total knowledge is not quite as incomprehensible as it once was. Think of it, you put your card into the gas pump and within 2 seconds a computer somewhere has identified you and knows that you are not a deadbeat. And that is with a machine that humans designed and built. So is there a Being who knows everything about everything instantly? Astonishing, but not unthinkable.
But that is not what stunned me: he likes little birds. He knows – yes, but so much better than that, he cares. Does the computer care? Not a bit. Its knowledge is cold and impersonal. Not our God. This is a truth Plato and Aristotle could not come to as they tried to think their way to the One whom they imagined must be behind everything. Surely The Life Force could neither delight in what it created or be grieved by any misfortune that occurred to the creation. But the Bible tells us he does care. He laughed when he made the world and he hurts when a sparrow dies. He cares about you today. With that knowledge you can face anything.
